While Adam Smith was certainly a pioneer in the field of economics (he was among the first to articulate the basic tenets of, as well as the rationale behind, capitalism), he was also a moral philosopher, couching his views on economics, wealth, private property, etc. in the language of conscience & social/ethical responsibility.
Also, I’m sure you’re all aware of his notion of the “invisible hand” — in fact, that was his nickname among the lasses in Edinburgh which he added to his work to impart a note of levity. He was all about the yucks … & monies.
